This Spring, I needed to do some cleanup on the green to get things started. I began by cutting down some dead trees that overlooked the green. They were a nuisance and we dropping twigs and branches on my green constantly.

First some rolling. The ground underneath the green has swelled and heaved quite a bit during the freezing and unfreezing of the winter months. Rolling the green will get us back to a flat smooth surface while the ground is still moist and impressionable.

I did a little maintenance work on my mower to get it ready for the first cut. It is extremely important to properly care for your equipment. This will keep it running longer and will give you the best results.

Next, I gave the green an easy first cut. This cut mostly just removes the debris from the green, since the bentgrass really isn't growing yet.

The green really hasn't started to green up yet. The temperature is just still too cool and will take some time before we have new growth. In the meantime, I noticed some small circles (fungus) on the green, which I spot treated. Probably some pink snow mold from the heavy snows and ice storms.
For treating various fungus, I use a variety of over the counter chemicals as well as some special order (golf course quality) stuff and a small 2 gallon sprayer that you pump with hand. It takes me a few minutes to cover the green this way. Use caution whenever applying chemicals. This is dangerous stuff!

Finally, I gave the green a nice application of fertilizer to get her started. I finished off the afternoon with some putting. The surface was actually pretty slick, because it hasn't started growing yet.
